SA$$ are an alternative pop 5 piece originally from Birmingham currently based out of North London made up of Ryan Ward on Vocals, Nicky Preston on Synth and Guitar, Fraser Knott on Drums, Jack Bedford on Bass and Craig Griffiths on Guitar.
Drawing inspiration from the likes of The XX, Drake and Foals, they offer a seemingly relaxed take on the typical ‘Birmingham’ sound that has developed in recent years. Tracks feature a combination of woozy electronic drums interspersed with tropical guitar, heavy bass and synth, topped off with a layer of introspective R&B vocals.
The band have just released their latest single “Island For Two”, “the first track where we actually worked with a producer (Ian Flynn) in a studio” according to guitarist Craig.
Ryan, whose forlorn falsetto is ever present throughout, explained the thought process that went into the song-writing: “With the song, we tried to collate the feeling of post-breakup depression and anxiety through both the lyrics and the soundscape”
Having played shows in venues in London and Birmingham such as The Garage and The Rainbow, the boys have also just announced their first headline “Sa$$ & Friends” show at the legendary Hare & Hounds in Kings Heath. The gig poster almost reads like a Birmingham variety show, as SA$$ will have support from three bands including local lads Spilt Milk Society as well as stand up comedian Danny Clives, and regular Moschino Hoe Versace Hottie DJ Romo Weeks.
