Having been a fan of Filfury’s work for some time, and seeing his work on many campaigns by the likes of leading sneaker retailers Size? and time keepers G-shock, I always wanted to work with him at sneaks&peaks and the sneaker gods answered. Filfury has recently moved back to Birmingham and will be exhibiting work at the next event. Expect to see iconic trainer silhouettes in classic colour ways such as the Airmax 90 infrared, Stan Smith and current hype machine that is the Yeezy Boost get deconstructed and digitally recomposed as contemporary forms like animals, insects, skulls and guns. His 3D work is available as resin casts or hi res prints.

You have traveled far and wide and worked with global brands such as Nike and Reebok, what brings you back to Birmingham?

The beautiful weather, the natural landscape and happy people… Haha!

I’ve come back for family, you can’t forget your roots. I’m also fortunate that my work allows me to be based anywhere so I’m enjoying being back home for now.

Your a self confessed sneaker head and I’ve heard this carried over to when naming your children?
Yeah had to be done… Cortez and Blazer.

When did your sneaker obsession begin, what triggered it?

Mom couldn’t afford the kicks I so badly needed… So she actually set me a challenge – do better at school and we’ll find the money some how. BOOM! I put my head down at school, and I got my first pair of Nike Air Max BW (infrared/black). From there it became the seal of approval for doing well. So the the second I had my own money it was obvious what it would be spent on…

Where does your design inspiration come from?

People, places, nature, music, fashion and old school graphic design communication… I’d like to say something more profound but I’m a product of an 80/90s youth so tv, toys, cartoons and video games are what I grew up on. Later finding music and fashion.

Are there any kicks that you have struggled to breakdown and recreate?

I really want to do a piece with the AM Plus (TN) but there isn’t actually much material on them once you get around all the plastic… So they are limiting… but we’ll see. Previously anything that I wanted to turn into a bird has been a nightmare until I decided to go with a Converse All-Star – which gave me the material coverage I could create feathers with.

What’s your go to sneaker at the minute?
Totally bought into the BOOST hype, they are fast becoming my beaters… All white Adidas Ultra Boost.

Can you let us know about any current projects or collaborations your working on?

I honestly have some really exciting things on at the moment… but cant share… Its actually an evolution of my style and sees mn working on a whole range of physical sculptures for a luxury fashion brand. Watch this space.
