Friday 8th July
Hankks @ The Sunflower Lounge

Remember those days when you adorned a trilby, skipped on down to your local indie disco and hollered along to The Libertines until you threw up? Those days when indie ruled the charts? It wasn’t a dream. It was around 2004. Birmingham band Hankks have that classic indie rock swagger that you thought had long since perished. Their shout-along anthems make you want to buy a beer just so you can throw it around as you pogo along to their set. Go see it for yourself in the sweaty basement of The Sunflower Lounge. It’s set to be a corker.

Friday 8th July
Event Cinema; The Thing screening @ The Mockingbird Theatre

John Carpenter’s stone cold classic from 1982 is getting defrosted and re-screened and celebrated at The Mockingbird Theatre this Friday night. Make sure you aren’t sleeping alone after watching it though or maybe you’d feel safer on your own? The Thing is as much a psychological scare-fest as it is gorey and afterwards you won’t trust anyone let alone any THING! Mwahahahaa. The special effects are mind-bogglingly ahead of their time so don’t even bother with the naff 2011 remake. Stay true to John Carpenter’s vision and feast your eyes on his masterpiece.

Friday 8th July – Sunday 10th July
Mostly Jazz Funk & Soul Festival @ Moseley Park

This festival has been a local institution for as long as most of us can remember. Set in the idyllic surroundings of Moseley Park; the line up is bursting at the seams with seasoned legends. The line up always seems to out-do the last year’s line up. This year you can see De La Soul rub shoulders with George Clinton and Grandmaster Flash play on the same stage as Average White Band. The line up is madness. Like any good festival; the madness doesn’t end with the music; after-parties will be popping off around Birmingham, various food stalls will be serving the good stuff and Moseley Park is always worth further exploration. Good times.

Saturday 9th July
Waved @ The Rainbow

This is the fourth instalment of the Waved party series. Again kicking off royally at The Rainbow. The night brings the familiar worlds of grime and hip hop together in the club setting. The line up is rather large this time around. Highlights include local legend Jaykae popping up to do his recent singles and host with the most Rtkal keeping things lively. Waved proves that Birmingham has as much to offer as London when it comes to grime.

Saturday 9th July
DJ Luck & MC Neat @ Hare & Hounds

If you yearn to get a little bit more than just a little bit sweaty to a soundtrack made up of the glory days of garage then you should’ve already got your ticket to see veterans DJ Luck & MC Neat tear up the Hare & Hounds. If you didn’t get a ticket then you’ll need more than a little bit of luck to get in; this bad boy is sold out. For those of you who are in attendance; have it large for the rest of us shmucks who didn’t get a ticket OK? And for those of us who missed out; why not have a pint in the pub of the Hare & Hounds downstairs and try and catch a few echos of the magic going on upstairs.
