AVOTRE is not like the common, genre-specific label as we know it all too well, not another Techhouse-imprint that’s dropping hardly distinguishable productions every week. The basic principle coming to effect in this venture would be called ‘laissez-faire’ in its mother tongue. It’s not just Housemusic about to happen here, there are rather all sorts of things about to happen. Be it R’n’B, be it Downbeat, Disco and whatnot. Stylewise, AVOTRE offers a home for everything that represents the different tempers of the contributing producers. Belonging to this crew are, next to Santé himself: the already capturing, on Gigolo and Souvenir releasing Re.You, Munich resident Sascha Sible, who already came into picture with releases on Be Chosen and Souvenir and Ahmad Laren from New York, who just recently moved to Berlin and Hamburgs very own New Comer Sidney Charles wo had his debut at Kling Klong.
Santé, hailing from Berlin, is part of a new school of artists championing musicality, skillfulness and creativity over mindless loops and endless repetition. His productions, like those on his record label AVOTRE, ooze character, charisma & humour, feelings so often overlooked in the realms of house music.
Santé’s career trajectory has grown hand in hand with AVOTRE’s reputation. His success has allowed the brand, founded in 2012, to grow incredibly quickly, to the point where it is now an established label selling out at least two international showcase events every month while continuing to act as a ‘go-to’ label for the undergrounds hottest acts. 2015 saw the release of two further successful House Lessons releases – One from long term friend Russ Yallop, and the other, touring and production partner Sidney Charles.
Looking to the year ahead, Santé’s 2016 calendar is already filling up with key events such as Mysteryland, BPM, EDC New York and several key dates with mega-successful Spanish promoter El Row as well as a five date residency at Sankeys Ibiza for Warriors alongside label mate Sidney Charles. Add to all of this several highly anticipated releases, including Santé’s very own House Lesson’s album – expected to drop in October – and there is no doubt that 2016 will be another steppingstone year on Santé’s path to becoming one of the world’s biggest DJ/producers.
Born Sidney Charles Hurricane Vieljans (yes, really), his journey towards the world of house and techno began when he first started DJing hip-hop, soul and funk at the age of 15. Taking his cues from the golden age of turntablism and associated culture in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, his attentions were led towards other sounds of the era also enjoying their first heyday. His infatuation with those classic 4/4 club sounds is something that lives and breathes vividly in his music today. “I see myself mainly connected with the raw house sound” he says of the style he projects with his productions and DJ sets today. “I am highly influenced by the early ‘90s. Jacking beats; heavy kicks; dirty highs. But I also like to experiment a lot to not make people bored of a certain sound.” Whatever shade of house or techno he’s producing, it’s always packed full of hard grooves, raw sounds and a classy simplicity that lets the track do what it’s supposed to do: make your ass wiggle.
For a producer who only started releasing music in 2011, Sidney’s achievements are all the more impressive. In the space of just three years, his works have graced bastions of house and techno such as Avotre, 8bit, I Am A House Gangster, Moda Black, Off, VIVa, Kling Klong, SCI+TEC, Suara and Area Remote – each release adding to his clout and helping him to become one of the biggest names in the underground. And that’s where he wants to stay. He has no lofty aspirations to play arena shows or break through into the mainstream of electronic music. He’d rather stay true to the scene and surroundings he loves and develop and grow therein.
KATJA is a Berlin based House and Jack-House producer/DJ who has shown incredible talent since first debuting her unique sound at the tender age of 18. Her musical endeavors started young, based on a passion for 80’s and early 90’s Hip-Hop through artists such as Grandmaster Flash, A Tribe Called Quest, Dr. Dre & Talib Kweli – all of whom tastemakers who inspired the young talent to explore to the art of turntablism – blending beats into a sound unique to her own intended sonic direction. KATJA quickly developed her talents, falling fast in love with the sound, energy and aesthetics of house and techno after discovering a friend’s vinyl collection – a vast repertoire of 90’s Detroit House. She has now now concentrated on developing her unique style of house music with a big passion for analogue synthesizers – all the while staying true to her Hip-Hop roots.
Drawing inspiration from artists such as Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Richie Hawtin, The Prodigy plus many other contemporary artists whom specialize in blurring the lines of current electronic music. Now breaking through into the European underground scene, KATJA has caught the eye of labels such as AVOTRE where she will be making her debut release later in 2016 and has a packed touring schedule for the ret of the year, which includes dates at Watergate Berlin and Boxxed in Birmingham, plus further shows with AVOTRE in Dublin and a show in her hometown of Nuremberg.
